Summer League 2009 Champions - Newark
The Summer League started in 1997 with 8 teams and after a decade has 42 teams competing in 4 divisions, with over 1000 people taking part. The main aim of the Summer League was to provide diversionary activities for local young Bangladeshi people during the holiday period. Many were getting into anti-social behaviour, petty crime, drugs and vandalism. It was also to unify the community and bring the young people together as there were high incidents of horrific gang violence between the different estates.
Today young people look forward to the Summer League as demonstrated by the BFA Blog and have taken positions of responsibility as coaches, managers and secretary of their teams. The league has also increased community cohesion as more than 55 different ethnic groups participated in 2009.

In 2009, BFA organised the first Summer Youth League for U12’s alongside the adult league. The league attracted 7 local teams and hopefully will grow like the adult league.
